A Chiropractic Future

Why I Chose to be a Chiropractor

I’d first like to welcome you to my blog! My name is Greg Haylett, and I am a graduate student at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. You might be wondering why I am choosing to write this blog, or what makes me any different from anyone else who has chosen to become a chiropractor? For starters, I didn’t always know I was going to choose this career path. Up until fairly recently, it actually hadn’t even been a consideration of mine. So how did I get here? What led me to the decision to become a chiropractic doctor? To answer that, I have to tell you a little bit about who I am.

I started my college career at Ohio University in pursuit of becoming a doctor of physical therapy, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. I have always known that I wanted to dedicate my life towards helping people, and I’ve held a deep fascination for the science of how things work. I decided the best way to combine these passions was with physical therapy. It wasn’t until I got deeper into my science courses that I started to really learn the details and mechanisms of how neurological and chemical interactions taking place within the body work; this lead me to the realization that the best way to fix problems is at their root cause. Learning about how medicines work within the body and the side effects they can have based on the location where they affect a cascade lead me further down this line of logic. I kept circling back to finding and fixing the root cause of the problem. Unfortunately, during this time in my life several members of my family were suffering from a variety of health problems. Due to these events, my passion for using my skills and knowledge to help others fix their problems at the source was elevated. After I graduated from Ohio University, I spent the next year completing internships with two physical therapy clinics and applying to physical therapy schools. Chiropractic care was not even a consideration, as I continued to pursue physical therapy as a means to try to help people’s bodies function how they are meant to. It wasn’t until my mom’s chiropractor offered for me to shadow at his clinic that chiropractic care even entered my radar.

During my time shadowing a chiropractor, I not only saw my own health improve, but I also began to see chiropractic care help so many people in ways that seemed like miracles. I started to realize how many problems can develop from the inhibition of the nervous system, and witness the body’s ability to function better against other problems once that interference is no longer there. This is when I knew I wanted to become a chiropractor. Realizing that I could help the body function the way it was intended to, I found the answer I was unknowingly searching for. This is how I can have an impact at the beginning of the cascade, where everything comes from: the spinal cord.
